The Violin Channel reports the 2018 Washington International String Competition finalists in Washington, D.C. The seven finalists listed are Maya Anjali Buchanan, Youjin Lee, Muriel Garnet Razavi, Tony Rymer, Felicitas Schiffner, Zhihao Wu, and Zhanbo Zheng, with the competition open to players aged 18 to 28.
The Sinzheimer Guadagnini violin, made during Guadagnini’s Turin period, was sold for £1,587,000 (€1.8 million) at a Tarisio sale, the highest price for an instrument by this maker at auction. The instrument carried a 1937 certification from Fridolin Hamma and was at one time played by Carl Flesch.
