Maegis Arts is an independent Canadian private sales firm based in Montreal, specializing in international private treaty transactions involving exceptional works of art and rare string instruments.
Our practice encompasses fine art from Old Masters through modern and contemporary art, as well as rare string instruments, with a principal focus on those by Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù,” two of the leading makers from the golden age of Cremonese violin making.
Buyer Representation. We work with buyers and their authorized representatives to define acquisition criteria, identify and assess suitable opportunities, negotiate preliminary terms, arrange private viewings, finalize terms, and manage each transaction through closing.
Seller Representation. We work with sellers and their authorized representatives to position works and instruments for private sale, present them selectively to qualified buyers, manage interest, negotiate preliminary terms, arrange private viewings, finalize terms, and manage each transaction through closing.
We work primarily with principals and duly authorized representatives pursuing defined acquisition or sale objectives. We seek direct access to the principal or authorized decision-maker and generally do not participate in extended intermediary chains or matters intended primarily for onward circulation.
To date, we have facilitated private transactions involving nearly 300 works across a broad range of periods. A representative selection of artists featured in these transactions appears on our Fine Art page.
Our rare string instruments practice draws on Alexandre Da Costa’s extensive experience with historically important instruments. Throughout his career, he has played numerous Stradivari instruments and spent more than a decade directing and curating one of the world’s largest private collections of Stradivari instruments.
Direct access. We seek direct communication with the buyer, seller, or duly authorized decision-maker. This supports confidentiality, pricing integrity, accountability, and efficiency.
Qualification before commitment. We assess counterparties, assets, and proposed transaction terms before advancing a matter.
Controlled circulation. We present opportunities selectively and disclose information progressively to qualified counterparties as each potential transaction advances. This helps limit unnecessary market exposure and protect confidentiality.
Transaction coordination. We coordinate each matter from initial qualification and preliminary negotiations through viewings, final terms, closing, and settlement, working with legal counsel and other specialist advisers as appropriate.
