First violins imitated human voices: study

phys.org

The study investigates how 16th to 18th century Italian luthiers, including Andrea Amati and members of the Stradivari family, crafted violins that imitate human vocal ranges. Researchers tested 15 antique instruments and analyzed voices of eight men and eight women, noting Amati and Gasparo da Salò violins mimicked male voices while Stradivari violins aligned more with female voices; the study was published in PNAS.
