Leicester Bangs reports that a 300-year-old Stradivarius violin worth £1.2m was recovered. Violinist Min-Jin Kym, who had the instrument stolen over two years ago, expresses an incredible feeling of elation upon its recovery in the Midlands.
Kim Min-jin, a violinist based in the UK, recovered a Stradivarius violin valued at about 120,000 pounds (around 210 million won) that had been stolen in London three years earlier. The instrument, made in 1696 and one of only about 450 Stradivarius violins worldwide, was found last week in a building in Middlesex after a police report and expert evaluation.
MusicaAntigua reports that a Stradivarius violin valued at nearly two million euros, owned by Korean violinist Min-Jin Kym, was stolen in London in 2010 and later recovered in the Midlands near Birmingham. The instrument was found safe after a public appeal on Crimewatch and arrests were made in connection with the theft.
The Bowdoin International Music Festival’s final concert features an all-strings program at Crooker Theater at 7:30 p.m. The program includes Bach’s Suite No. 3 for Solo Cello, BWV 1009; Beethoven’s String Quartet in G major, Op. 18, No. 2; and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70. The Violin Channel reports the death of American violinist Stephen Zoltan Kecskemethy, aged 68, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He served as first violinist with the Portland String Quartet for more than four decades and held teaching positions at Queens University and Bates, Bowdoin and Colby Colleges.
