Michel van der Aa’s Up-Close for cello, string ensemble and film is set to be performed in two composer portrait concerts in the Netherlands. The works on the program include Imprint, Memo, and Oog. The Los Angeles Times article reports that Carrie Dennis, the Los Angeles Philharmonic principal violist, coached actress Catherine Keener for the role in A Late Quartet. Dennis spent two weeks with Keener in late 2010, helping with hold and mannerisms, as well as instrument handling and other small details, while the Brentano String Quartet performed the soundtrack.

Dieter Machold, a prominent dealer in Stradivarius violins and other rare stringed instruments, was sentenced to six years in prison by a Vienna court after being found guilty of fraud and embezzlement in a multi-million dollar scheme. The court noted that he used instruments he was supposed to sell for clients to secure bank credits to finance his business and private life, and Machold declared bankruptcy two years prior with debts reported between 80 million and 150 million euros (about $102-191 million).

The article reports that a trainee teacher, John Powles, 24, admitted burglary of a rare 18th-century Guarnerius violin worth £500,000 and was jailed for eight months at Harrow Crown Court; his co-defendant Dean Barton, 24, received nine months with a further three months for handling stolen goods. The burglary at David Roth's Cricklewood home also involved theft of candlesticks, jewellery and collectable coins, and the violin was later recovered and returned to Mr Roth.
