A 1760 Edward Lewis violin, allegedly stolen from violinist Alan Brind in 2004, has reemerged at Bonhams auction house after a dealer brought it in; Philip Scott, Bonhams’ head of musical instruments, initiated further research and the instrument was confirmed as stolen in an insurance database. Alan Brind, who won BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1986, is a freelance player with London orchestras.
The Epoch Times reports that on August 1 at the Russia–China border near Baikal, customs seized a century-old violin being illegally transported by a Chinese student. The instrument, found on the Moscow–Beijing international train, is preliminarily identified as a 19th-century Italian-made violin dated to 1892. A Chinese female student from Yekaterinburg Conservatory and a Chinese male national were charged administratively for undeclared items, with possible criminal proceedings if the artifacts are confirmed as historical relics; the violin and coins have been sent to Irkutsk for appraisal.
