Knoxville Museum of Art acquires painting by Catherine Wiley

Catherine Wiley (1879-1958) painting Untitled, 1913, oil on canvas, 28 1/2 x 32 3/4 inches was acquired by the Knoxville Museum of Art. The work was purchased at Case Antiques in Knoxville on January 28, 2012, with about $120,000 pledged by donors to cover hammer price, premium, cleaning, and conservation.

The sale to the Qatari royal family broke the previous painting record set in 2006 by a Jackson Pollock work. Cézanne painted The Card Players as part of a series of five oil paintings from 1890 to 1895.

Joan Miró Painting-Poem (1925) set a new artist record at Christie’s Impressionist & Modern sale in London with a hammer price plus buyer’s premium of £16.6 million ($26.6 million). The painting from 1925 contains the etched words “le corps de ma brune puisque je l’aime comme ma chatte habillée en vert salade comme de la grêle c’est pareil,” and came from a private New York collection; it sold well over its high estimate of about $14 million. The prior Miró record was La caresse des étoiles, which sold for $17,065,000 in 2008 at Christie’s (per Artnet).

Elizabeth Taylor art sale fetches £14m

Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, and Claude Pissarro artworks from Elizabeth Taylor's collection sold at Christie's in London for £13.7m; Van Gogh Vue de l'asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Remy sold for £10.1m, Degas self-portrait sold for £713,250, and Pissarro Pommiers a Eragny sold for £2.9m. The total exceeded the £6.2m estimate; a further sale of 35 works is planned, and a December sale of Taylor's personal items raised £94m.

The Scream heads for the auction block

Edvard Munch’s The Scream (1895, pastel on board, from the late 19th century) is set to be sold at Sotheby’s in New York on May 2. The painting is being sold by Petter Olsen and could fetch more than $80 million; Sotheby’s announcement notes there are four versions of The Scream, with this one being the only version still in private hands.

Matisse sea and sky reunited at National Gallery of Australia

Henri Matisse’s Oceania, the sea, and its companion Oceania, the sky have been reunited at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. The gallery purchased Oceania, the sky in 1990 and bought Oceania, the sea (1946) from the Matisse family with funds donated by Timothy Fairfax.
