Two Bierstadt paintings bring in $4 million at Reno auction

Albert Bierstadt’s Mount Rainier, 1890, oil on canvas, 54 by 83 inches, sold for $2.1 million and Bierstadt’s Lander’s Peak, Wyoming, 1863, sold for $1.9 million at the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in Reno, totaling $4 million. Charles M. Russell’s Water for Camp, 1892, and A Dangerous Sport, 1924, together brought nearly $3 million, and Maynard Dixon’s Sculptured Sandstone, 1944, sold for $351,000; overall sales exceeded $17 million at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino.

Philadelphia Museum announces acquisitions

Daniel Garber’s oil on canvas of his daughter, titled “Tanis,” 1915, was purchased with funds from Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest. The Philadelphia Museum of Art announced acquisitions spanning from a 10th century Indian Chola bronze to Sean Scully’s triptych “Iona,” 2004, including Impressionist and Modern works and nearly 200 works by self-taught artists from a major private collection; gifts include works by Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, and Cassatt, and a bequest of Hubert Robert. The additions are supported by gifts, purchases, and pledged donations, with significant contributions from collectors Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz.
