After 70 years, painting seized by the Nazis is returned

James Barron and Sewell Chan report that a 17th-century oil painting, Portrait of a Musician Playing a Bagpipe, seized from Max Stern’s German-ruled collection by the Nazis, was returned to Stern’s estate at a Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan. The painting, signed as 1632 and by an unknown Dutch artist, was part of a forced sale arranged with Lempertz Auction House. The event marks a milestone in restitution efforts by the Max Stern Art Restitution Project.
