Knoedler and Seattle Art Museum settle over Matisse lawsuit

theartnewspaper.com

The Seattle Art Museum and Knoedler & Co settled a lawsuit over the Matisse painting Odalisque (1928). The museum had sought the full fair market value, estimated at about $2 million. As part of the settlement, Knoedler will transfer works or cash equivalent to SAM, reimburse SAM's legal costs, and waive a portion of SAM's attorney fees; SAM agreed to withdraw fraud claims. The painting was originally donated to SAM in 1991 after being acquired from Knoedler in 1954 and later conveyed to Rosenberg heirs who had alleged it was stolen by the Nazis.
