The Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture moved to exercise the right of tanteo to acquire Francisco de Goya's The Countess of Chinchón for national collections, after the current owners notified a sale for 4,000 million pesetas. The offer came from financier and art collector Juan Abelló, president of Airtel. Mariano Rajoy, the government official cited, called the acquisition the most important of the current legislature, with the project reportedly valued at 14,000 million pesetas in art purchases.

Goya fue vendido en Nueva York por 79,6 millones de pesetas (497.500 dólares) en Sotheby’s, un boceto fechado en 1771 titulado Hanibal vencendor contemplando Italia desde los Alpes. El comprador fue un coleccionista privado norteamericano.
