Christie’s to Offer Five Schiele Works from the Frederick Gerstel Collection

Christie’s announced that five Egon Schiele works on paper from Dr Frederick Gerstel’s collection would enter its June German and Austrian Art section in London. Three had been on long-term loan to New York’s Museum of Modern Art, while the group’s estimates reached as high as £3.2 million.

Turner’s 1840 Venetian landscape Giudecca, La Donna della Salute and San Giorgio by J. M. W. Turner sold for $35.9 million at Christie’s Old Masters sale in New York, reportedly to Steve Wynn. The auction total reached $74.5 million with six other works selling for over $1 million; the Turner was consigned by the St. Francis of Assisi Foundation.

Mats Tinnsten and Peter Carlsson of Mid-Sweden University in Ostersund analyze Stradivarius violins using computer models to replicate their acoustic properties. Stradivari built more than 1,100 violins in Cremona, Italy, with about 600 surviving today. A Stradivarius violin recently sold at Christie's in New York for just over $2 million.

Turtle Island Quartet violinist Evan Price lost his violin on April 8 after leaving it outside Billings, Montana’s airport, as reported by the Billings Gazette. The instrument, an 1879 Eugenio Praga violin, is valued at about $50,000. Price spent two days checking pawnshops and stores while police reviewed surveillance footage.

La viola Medicea, detta anche del Crocefisso, è stata ritrovata dai carabinieri del nucleo tutela culturale insieme ai colleghi di Milano, Lodi e Pavia dopo 26 anni. L instrumento fu costruito nel 1595 dai liutai cremonesi Antonio e Gerolamo Amati ed è di proprietà dell’assicurazione che aveva pagato il premio al maestro Luigi Alberto Bianchi.
