Carol Vogel reports that the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles purchased an El Greco, 'Christ on the Cross,' at Sotheby’s for $5.8 million, the artist's record auction price. Getty curator Scott Schaefer described the work as the best version of that composition and the first major El Greco to enter a Los Angeles museum.
Caja Madrid acquired the Rubens painting Diana and her nymphs hunting for 4.5 million euros (about 750 million pesetas) at Christie’s in London and will loan it to the Prado Museum as tax payment. The work came from the Infantado ducal collection and was painted between 1636 and 1637 for King Felipe IV.
Publisher Si Newhouse resigns from the Museum of Modern Art board after buying a 1913 Cubist Picasso painting that had been deaccessioned. The artwork, Man with Guitar, was sold to raise funds and Newhouse reportedly purchased it for $10 million.
